A Taste of Freedom
Still half asleep, James clumsily jumped right out of his rock hard mattress, with his friends Johnny and Joseph, along with a number of other depressed prisoners, to begin their laborious day. Jame’s bare feet hit the cold dirt and looked around to see the expected tall fences and prickly barbed wires. Prisoners and friends cloaked in dirt and bare-thin, striped, and torn up prison uniforms were shoved out of a musty barrack with at least fifty others. Barking guards with shiny guns everywhere.
Attendance time rolled around and James winked to Johnny. James, Johnny, and Joseph carried their skinny legs behind the barracks and soon halted at a corner with a ten foot tall fence, making sure to duck behind a bush and scout out the area for danger. A guard was easily spotted in the corner and the nervous prisoners knocked him out with a rock, hid him under a bed, and took the guard’s knife to start sawing at the steel fence.
Jame’s heart beat so loud that everyone else could hear it. They could almost feel the freedom but also got a jolt of fear in their spines as they sliced at the metal fence.
In the trees, a helpless little fly stuck in a spider web.
The boys quickly sliced open a small, jagged, sharp hole now surrounded by piercing sharp metal spikes from the broken fence, making it tough to climb through. Johnny forcefully lashed through the fence and the thorney edge of the metal ripped up his skin.
An alarmed soldier, with his thick heavy black boots and red armband, darkened in his uniform. His shiny black gunn waved in the air, ready to shoot, and he scowled at the escaping prisoners, now running in our direction.
Joseph was paralyzed with fear, and his heart stopped. But, he immediately snapped back to reality when he heard their shouts. Quick terror struck James, like a fiery match lit, and his eyes slowly widened at every pace. Thoughts rushed through his head. Thoughts about What If I get caught. We would surely be arrested or worse.
The struggling fly peels half its body off the sticky web, but spider legs plunge forward to chase the frightened fly back.
James vigorously pummeled through the fence and was about to dart with Johnny until he realised that he left a man on the other side.
“Joseph lets go,” James desperately pleaded.
“You guys go without me,”
“No, I will not leave without all of my best buddies,” cried Johnny as he approached the fence.
“Yes you can. You are strong and need to start moving. They are almost here. Hey, it's my turn to take one for the team. You go now. Triple J. Bros, forever.”
It all seemed to happen in slow motion. Joseph waved his skinny arms as a brave distraction and ran towards shelter. Each stride came fast as his friend disappeared into the darkness of the barracks. The two darted away before getting spotted and got a taste of freedom as they fell into the depths of the forest.
The little black fly, at the last moment bit off its last stuck leg. It was a sacrifice that must be done in order to reach freedom.
