A Jade’s Life
Hi. My name is Jade. My parents said I’m a metamorphic rock. I was formed thousands of years ago from high heat and pressure. Somehow I still am considered a child. All of my family is green. I live in a hole underground in Canada. I attend Rock Elementary with many different rocks and minerals. I have an annoying brother named Jadeite. He always brags about being more valuable than me. He is the only white jade in our family. Currently, we are trying to escape from jewelers because there is only 12 jadeite discovered, and he can be the thirteenth. My grandpa and grandma live in Columbia. In the 1800s, most of my ancestors lived in China or New Zealand.
Now I am going to tell you about a day at school. During social studies we learned about great rocks who discovered humans. We took our math test and I totally rocked out with perfect scores. I rolled out proudly and bumped straight into my bully, Diamond. He is the toughest and tallest kid in class standing 5 inches 2 centimeters tall and I am only 3 inches tall. It was an accident that I bumped into him. He yelled “Watch where you are rolling shorty!” I answered, “Well it was not my fault that you were in the middle of the hallway.” He replied, “Did I give you permission to talk? You have a hardness scale of 7-8! I am the strongest and hardest mineral on earth with a hardness of 10!” Then things got ugly. We began a huge argument. Out of nowhere he picked me up and threw me with great force. I took off flying like a bird that lost control. I scraped my head against a tile on the wall and left a colorless streak. I retreated to the bathroom. When I looked in the mirror I saw that I still had a shiny but dull luster, except where I hit my head, it a bit more dull.
The next day we were off for summer break. My family packed up and hopped aboard a log. We sailed off to New Zealand through many rivers and streams. Then trouble found us when we found Diamond on the pathway. He had his other tough friends such Ruby and Emerald. They were just as strong as him. We began arguing about who is more useful. He said, “I can be used as jewelry and I am a very rare mineral.” I replied, “Well I can be used as weapons, turned into daggers and I make a popular jewelry in many different countries. Humans love me!” Diamond admitted, “I guess you are useful and a good rock then.” Then a bigger enemy came. Humans! They spotted us all. I saw his name tag and he works for a jewelry store. I was the only one that spotted him, so I yelled “Human alert!!!” The human grabbed Diamond, but Diamond slipped out of his hand and hit the terrible jewelry maker in the face. Then we all joined in, including Ruby and Emerald to move the log towards the human’s feet, causing him to trip. He fell down, scared. He couldn’t believe rocks were moving on their own! He was no match for all of us so he ran away, scared of what rocks can do. Diamond and his friends decided that it was better for us to stick together.
We learned that it was always good to have friends of different hardness. My jade family said goodbye to Diamond and his friends, and we made it to grandpa and grandma’s house. And that that is another adventurous day in a life of a jade!
